Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
